Summer Garden Projects: The Joys of Summer (5 sessions)

The class covers a range of information such as: the best veggies to plant, how to care for container gardens, the best perennials to plant and diagnosing what’s wrong with your garden.
“Gardening gives you a sense of doing something outdoors,” says Mary Kroening, MU extension horticulture specialist and state Master Gardener coordinator. “Working in the dirt is therapeutic and great exercise. Many people find gardening very relaxing, whether they’re going to be an avid gardener or just trying to grow a small vegetable garden.”

Watercolor for Adults

If you’d rather paint flowers than plant them, Columbia Art League has a class to help guide your brush.
“We like to offer a variety of media for our adult classes,” says Amy Meyer, education director at Columbia Art League. “This summer they’re focusing on pastels. Watercolor particularly we find to be a very sought-after media. Watercolor is a very fun and forgiving media. It’s especially good for painters just getting back into their art or starting up.”

If you’d like to explore art but want to break loose from painting or drawing, the Missouri Craft Studio offers a class in glass creation.
This workshop will cover the basic techniques used to create and shape simple beads.
“When you start working with hot glass, you find yourself mesmerized, and it gives you a whole new art form,” Bradshaw says. “Glass is a passion; once you fall in love, it’s forever.”

If you like seafood but have always feared undercooking the fish, then this summer’s the time to attempt cooking it for yourself — but only after you’ve taken the Career Center’s class. “This class is the first to be given on the subject,” Giddens says. “A lot of people are not acquainted with seafood, but they would like knowing how to handle it better because of the health benefits. This class is an attempt to educate people on preparation, cooking and some facts of seafood.”
