True resolutions

STAFF

February 26, 2009 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Last year upon arriving at the Artisan to purchase my True/False tickets, I was met by a standing-room-only crowd of more than 140 people. As it was my first year in Columbia, the mob scene was utterly unexpected, especially because I had made it a point to get there an hour early.

I bitterly accepted my lackluster place in line and listened as volunteers shouted names of movies that sold out as I waited. I soon spotted an acquaintance who had a far superior number (in the forties!), and he generously pilfered me a better position. To those whom I might have cut, I apologize.

After last year’s close call, I vowed to do things differently this year. I bought a pass as soon as they went on sale and spent hours creating a nerdarific time schedule by painstakingly rotating movies in and out of various timeslots. It was clearly too life-consuming, but it was a lot of fun.

There’s something innately special about True/False and the happiness it brings to the city. Columbians have grown to treasure what many would consider a boring snooze fest (a weekend full of documentaries?) as evidenced by the packed sidewalks during festival weekend.

If you didn’t geek out and buy a pass this year, individual tickets go on sale today. And you might want to get there early; I hear the line can get pretty long.
