Abstract Love

Jakob Berr

Over the decades, the big burr oak just outside McBaine has seen countless couples engrave their affections for each other in the stone that stands next to the massive tree.

Love is something that everyone struggles to label. Of course the word love is defined in the dictionary. But in reality, it is an intangible, hazy feeling that comes in many forms. All of the photos collected here were taken with a hand-fashioned pinhole camera to further reveal the abstract manifestations of everyday love.

Perhaps the only way to truly define it is by pointing out examples of it: a man walking his dogs in the park, names inscribed on a wall by a young couple or flowers adorning a gravestone.

Frozen in time and enshrined in a silver picture frame, a couple kisses among jewelry ...

Death first parted and then reunited Earl Barnes and his wife, Margaret, who are buried ...

A sign of unconditional love and devotion to Allah, the Mosque of the Islamic Center ...

Harry White of Columbia walks his two dogs, Molly and Goldie, on the MKT Trail ...

Love alters a person’s daily life. In this regard, for better or worse, love is all-consuming. It is often tied together with sadness in an enduring battle of emotions. This photo essay pays homage to love’s bittersweet nature. Although chocolate-covered strawberries and dozens of roses are more common signs of love this time of year, the less obvious examples are often the more profound.
