Death of a festival

John Hook

September 4, 2008 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Surrounded by students in a three-college town, it’s easy to overlook the Missourians who reside outside the downtown bubble. This ignorance-is-bliss mentality is common in university towns. Even when the city screams character like Madison, Wis., the home of my undergraduate alma mater, the locals somehow blend in.

For the past 19 years, however, Columbians did everything but that during Twilight Festival as they showed up by the thousands. Dedicated families made the event a city staple and transformed the area we now know as The District. Just two weeks ago we at Vox heard that this month of Twilight is the last. Ever. But why? We decided it necessary to do some digging and weigh in. The festival isn’t going out with much of a bang. But it’ll definitely be kid-friendly.

Another Missourian we love, Deke Dickerson, graces the music section this week with some quirky facts, stellar name-dropping and rockabilly antics. Keeping it down home is the goal, but if you dig name-dropping and celebs on the small screen, perhaps you’ve rallied to save your favorite show. Not quite that dedicated? Read about those who are in “Survival of the Wittiest.”

If you prefer local entertainment to TV, tonight is the first of the last four Thursdays of Twilight. Enjoy it while it lasts.
