It started last November with a dress, and it hasn’t let up yet. I just picked up the $53, sequined, took-four-weeks-to-get-dyed shoes. Before that it was hosting a bridal shower/bachelorette party. Soon to come are a hotel room and travel arrangements. And there’s always the gifts. Whew.
I’ve lost track of how much cash I’ve invested to be a bridesmaid for a friend’s wedding. I suppose, as this is just the start of wedding season in my life, I’d better get used to spending a bit to help celebrate others’ special days.
Weddings can cost a bundle, as can attending them. But watching a couple exchange vows doesn’t have to mean a high credit card bill. As “Wedding woes” suggests, there are some simple solutions to keeping expenses in check … just don’t plan on venturing to a foreign country to take part in the bachelor or bachelorette party.
In addition to going thrifty on the nuptial traditions, there’s another place where romance comes at not so high a cost. All it takes is a read through a thick, yet very affordable, paperback to get some action. “Between the sheets” explores some of the lesser-known sub-genres within the expansive category of romance novels.
Although they’re not always highly regarded in the book world, these works of fiction certainly appeal to the diverse interests of those who enjoy a good love story. For instance, NASCAR fans can combine the thrill of laps around the track with a romantic adventure.
As exciting as some of these novels sound, I’m much more sold on the real-life love stories. And I’m happy to play a part in the festivities, despite the price tag.
If nothing else, I’m lucky enough to have pre-decided-upon attire for the big day. And there’s always the open bar to look forward to. Bring on the love.
