This year, Art in the Park is introducing cycling to its 50th annual outdoor art showcase through ArtCycle ’08, a competition with entries from the public and commissioned local artists. The designed cycles will start off the art-filled weekend in a parade from Flat Branch Park to Stephens Lake Park at 10 a.m. Sat., June 7. Entries are still being accepted.
The ArtCycles have to meet three requirements: They must be rideable, have no more than three wheels and be weatherproof. Awards, including a Mayor’s Choice and People’s Choice as well as $1,000 prizes for the top adult and junior artist, will be announced June 8.

Later this summer, the commissioned cycles will be auctioned to fundraise for the Columbia Art League. The goal, says Diana Moxon, executive director of the league, is for Columbia businesses to display the cycles after the weekend event so people can continue to enjoy the art.
During the weekend, visitors can view creations from 125 different artists from Columbia and as far away as California, Texas, Florida and Minnesota. See the full lineup of musical entertainment on page 13.
