I’ve always preferred to be the person behind the scenes. I’m pretty sure this stemmed from a stint as a stage manager back in fifth grade where I got to cue lights and props in a student production. I didn’t want anything to do with actually being on stage or in the spotlight.
But as the newest editor of Vox, with my picture running right next to this column every week, I’m stepping outside my comfort zone. And that’s a familiar theme for me as this marks the first summer I’ll spend as a resident of Columbia even though I’ve spent the past eight semesters living, learning and working right here.
Unknown territory aside, I’m thrilled to be working with a talented group of new editors. We’re geared up to present a relevant and entertaining magazine during this sure-to-be-hot Missouri summer.
And we’ve started off our tenure with a compilation of summer event previews and calendar highlights that are certain to provide a little fun in the sun, or just a few loud nights on Ninth Street with the musicians of Summerfest, which features our cover boys, Death Cab for Cutie. Vox writer Brian Doty talked with bassist Nick Harmer about the band’s new sound, a creative departure that fans new and old will likely enjoy hearing at Columbia’s coolest summertime series (page 12).
When the summer heat gets unbearable, and you’d rather do some indoor rocking out, there’s always the popular Rock Band video game. “Live from the living room” (page 6) explores the activity guitar experts and novices can enjoy in the comfort of the AC. The only thing missing? A version of the new Death Cab ballad to play on Rock Band.
Good luck this summer, Kim. I'm sure you're going to make a great editor.
