The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

May 1, 2008 | 12:00 a.m. CST

The Good:

COLOSSAL CALAMARI Scientists in New Zealand defrosted a rare colossal squid found near Antarctica last year. The squid, which was accidentally captured in a trawler’s net, was kept in an enormous frozen box. Colossal squids have eyes more than a foot in diameter and tentacles thicker than human limbs. The two-day defrosting process was broadcast on the Internet via a webcast. Seafood fans everywhere salivated.

The Bad:

DEAD DOLPHINS DON'T SWIM Audience members at Sea World witnessed a dolphin death in Discovery Cove last week. Sharky, 30 years old, died after colliding with another dolphin while performing aerial tricks during a show. The other dolphin is still being monitored but appears to be fine. Sea World spokeswoman Becca Bides says the incident was completely random and that the park is reviewing the incident to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

The Ugly:

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH For 14 years, 62-year-old Dwight Monreal has worked as an underwater golf-ball retriever at a Tampa golf course, where it isn’t uncommon to meet alligators. Last week, Monreal was forced to fight a gator intent on eating him. After seven minutes of struggle, Monreal escaped after he thrust his thumb into the creature’s eye. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and broken arm but plans on returning to work.
