Behind the Scenes of True/False

Come behind the scenes with True/False Film Festival volunteer Marion Brewer. She will be blogging as the big weekend approaches and keeping you updated throughout True/False.

Workin' for the Weekend

February 28, 2009 at 12:00 a.m.

Today True/False took to the streets with the annual kick-off parade on Broadway. As usual, it included a great assortment of fantastic and unique characters in terms of both the participants and the crowds. Thank you to everyone who came out despite the dropping temperatures!

Also, this year’s True Vision Award winner, Gaea Girls was shown to a packed Ragtag this evening. Director Kim Longinotto made an in-person appearance. The True Vision Award, T/F's only award, is given annually to a filmmaker (or filmmakers) whose work shows dedication to the creative advancement of the art of nonfiction filmmaking.

In the one-man-band spirit of the festival, my friend and I had the last-minute opportunity to go pick up filmmaker Fredrik von Krusenstjema at the Kansas City airport late last night. I mean, how many opportunities does one get to spend two hours picking the brain of the director of Necrobusiness? (Sidenote/Biased pitch: If you haven’t looked into seeing the film, you should. It is a fascinating, darkly funny story.) It was a great experience; Fredrik is a fascinating man and completely reaffirmed my love for the people that this festival brings to Columbia.

I know all of you are busy planning your fun, film-packed Saturday, so I’ll wrap this up. I highly recommend checking out the “Gimme Truth” event, where local filmmakers submit stories that could be completely true or completely false. We let the audience be the judges! There are also several big screenings to check out, including We Live in Public, Rough Aunties, and No Impact Man. There are still tickets left for all of these, so if you’re interested feel free to swing by the box office today or before the films tomorrow.

Interested in a film that is NRT? Our Q system has once again proven a great success: everyone who waiting in the Q line at the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts got in this evening. Moral of the story? Don’t be discouraged! The Q line is effective, and I’d even go so far as to say it’s a pretty good time; it's a fun way to meet new people. Keep this in mind tomorrow as our schedule picks up. Happy festing!

True/False is here!

February 26, 2009 at 12:00 a.m.

Just like after weeks of putting up Christmas decorations you start to forget there’s an actual day involved with the Christmas process, after weeks of planning True/False it’s easy to forget that it’s all leading up to one action-packed weekend.

It’s been a big day in True/False land. We had our first official screening of “Afghan Star” in conjunction with the Missouri School of Journalism and…(drum roll please)...the box office opened!

Pass pick-up started at 5 p.m. today and went off without a hitch. Many, many thanks to everyone who came and waited patiently and to the volunteers that made their wait so short. Having the space next to the Artisan this year (the space formerly known as Club Tropicana) has helped immensely in terms of ticketing, merchandise, etc.

However, as big as today was, tomorrow is going to be even bigger! Thursday really marks the “official” start of the festival, when downtown really comes to life. I think it’s the variety of people the festival brings in-specifically to the downtown area- that makes True/False weekend one of my favorite times of year. Between filmmakers and guests, there’s a huge influx of fascinating people walking around. For example, this year we’ll even have an Oscar-winning director in our midst! Some of you may have heard of “Smile Pinki”, the Academy Award winner this year for best short documentary. Not only will this film be playing in our Oscar Shorts feature tomorrow night, the director herself will be present for the screening starting at 8:30 p.m. in Windsor Auditorium (Stephens College).

More updates to come tomorrow…in the mean time, start looking at the schedule and figuring out what films you’re going to see!
